Ireland will decriminalize cannabis
Another European country is about to begin the journey to cannabis legalization. Aodharn O Riordain, Minister for the National Drugs Strategy has been a breath of fresh air since he arrived in the job. He has been up front and honest with the public over drugs. On Wednesday there was a think tank with local and regional actors within the drug and alcohol field. The general consensus was that decriminalization is a good thing for society. There is no justification for jailing people for growing or using cannabis. It is a strong medicine and most importantly for Ireland, it is a safe, healthy alternative to alcohol. We all know the Irish cliche. As important as reducing alcohol consumption in Ireland, cannabis has another important benefit. Irish people are genetically more susceptible to getting diabetes. In all the research to date, it is understood that pot plays a vital role in preventing and treating diabetes!
In one stroke of a pen, alcohol consumption goes down and health spikes up. Add in an end to the drug turf wars that has endangered society and we have to ask, why haven’t you done this sooner?? There is still a lot of work to be done. This is the first time an Irish minister has openly called for decriminalization, there will be many more meetings and discussions but Ireland is now part of a European pattern. Portugal, Holland and then Italy, Poland, Germany, England and now Ireland have all had their highest officials calling for an end of the drug war.
Irish people looking to get involved should look to join their local Norml group or Encod.org. It is time to be brave, establish cannabis social clubs in your area and begin the conversation with your local police station. Cannabis users are equal members of society and we expect our collective wishes to be understood and respected.
Definitely think its the best idea, Cannabis is 114 times safer than Alcohol .. I use it for my epilepsy and also for recreational use. It helps with soo many things. It helps me sleep, eat because I don’t have the best appetite that really helps me, I don’t know where id be know without this. And research can only get better definitely looking forward to the future 🙂 I think this minister is the bravest in Ireland and his decision wont be regretted.

its waaaay more than 114 times safer than booze. Alcohol kills 500-800 irish people a year directly and many more through longer term related problems every year, nobody has ever died from weed, ever!! It is physically impossible. A pot overdose is a good nights sleep. You would have to smoke about 700kg of weed in about 15 minutes to overdose. So i would say its almost infinitely safer

Get drunk and suffer the next day. Get stoned and you wake up feeling refreshed. It doesn’t get any clearer than that !!!!

Proving that they have been Lying about cannabis for decades now, and cannot hide the facts any longer. as much as they want to continue to lie..
finally admitting… in America the
National Institute on Drug Abuse Director
Says Cannabidiol is Safe and Nonaddictive…
Nora Volkow,
the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA),
says that(CBD) – a compound found in cannabis –
is
“a safe drug with no addictive effects, data suggest that [CBD) – a compound found in cannabis] may have therapeutic value for a number of medical conditions”.

Hopefully it will pass through and Ireland can be on its way to being a leader in the European cannabis market. Irish alcoholism is at an all time high (pardon le pun).

This is it ! Europe is creaking into a new direction. One with cannabis inclusion rather than police state thuggery. Imagine telling someone they can’t do something that is healthy for them!!!

Oh dear, another I can’t see the forest because all the trees are in the way kind of person! Ireland is part of a clear European trend. Many other EU countries have had big announcements about cannabis in the last few days. These countries, thankfully now including Ireland, all have senior politicians calling for change.

When you see cannabis replacing toxic medication for chronic pain sufferers, you understand how important this debate is. There is no sensible argument left not to legalize the plant, so we might both be surprised how quickly it changes

The UK is doing a lot of work itself! I have been following what Teeside cannabis club are up to. They are pushing out the boundaries and talking to the police. This is sensible and eventually will bring legalization. Do you know where your local cannabis club is?

I have Colon cancer, everyone knows the benefits that cannabis brings to the sick,so what right do’s any Gov have to deny it! That is letting people die without allowing them the fight for life!

Jill the government has no authority over you in this case. You have a perfect human right to use cannabis to treat your illness. Organically grown cannabis can be a powerful medicine.
